This rare and early enamel on copper vase was designed by "Tiffany Girl" Edith Lautrup under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Lautrup, a Danish-born artist who had previously worked at Bing & Grondahl before emigrating to New York, was the first head of Tiffany's Enamel and Pottery Department before her departure from the firm around 1902.
This charming early example of Tiffany's enamel on copper work depicts a series of orange butterflies with detailed wings. The insects, arranged in a variety of configurations, float above a hand-hammered surface.
The vase is marked on the underside with initials for both Louis Comfort Tiffany and Edith Lautrup.
